Save the Date: Next Health & Wellness Fair to be held May 15 & 16, 2009
We are excited to announce the date and location for our 2009 Trans Community Health and Wellness Fair!

Minnesota's third annual Trans Community Health and Wellness Fair will be held on Friday, May 15 and Saturday, May 16, 2009.

This year, Friday will be "Provider's Day" focusing on provider training -- helping Minnesota practitioners, educators, and health care students understand trans perspectives and health needs, and Saturday will be "Community Day" focusing on trans people, partners, family, and friends/allies and our health and wellness.

We are working on offering CME and CEU credits for providers of various specialties on Friday, May 15 for those who are interested in this.  We plan to offer a keynote speech after lunch each day.

Our new location for the 2009 event will be Metropolitan State University, 700 E. 7th St., St. Paul, MN 55106

A huge thank you goes out  to our new co-sponsors, Lavender Bridge GLBT Student Organization and GLBT Student Services of Metropolitan State University.  Special thanks to Sidney Smith, Coordinator of GLBT Student Services.

If you are interested in joining the planning committee for the 2009 Fair, or if you have ideas or questions about the Fair, please contact us!

2008 Funding Updates
Thursday, August 21, 2008:  Be sure to come out to Pi Bar & Restaurant tonight from 7-10 p.m. for a fundraising event for MTHC!  The hugely popular Dildo Bingo night will be especially great this month, not only because we are the recipient organization, but also because it's the Smitten Kitten's five-year anniversary!  The Smitten Kitten donates all the prizes for dildo bingo, and Pi makes it happen.  Thanks to Pi, the Smitten Kitten, and YOU for supporting the Minnesota Transgender Health Coalition and playing some BINGO!

Month of August, 2008: Thanks to All God's Children Metropolitan Community Church for making us their August "DUO" Fund organization of the month for donations from the congregation.  We are honored to have been selected for this!  Special thanks to Greg Grinley, AGC member, for nominating us and making all the arrangements.

June 2008:  We are excited to announce that we have received a grant for $5,000 from the Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice!  From their website: "The Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice works for social, racial and economic justice in the U.S. and internationally.  Our grantmaking and philanthropic advocacy programs help lesbian and allied communities challenge oppression and claim their human rights."

Information About Minnesota State Health Care Plan Coverage
Prior to 2005, Minnesota public health insurance programs offered some coverage of gender reassignment surgeries. However, as of August 1, 2005, SRS is no longer covered in the three public health insurance programs:

· Medical Assistance (MA)
· General Assistance Medical Care (GAMC)
· MinnesotaCare

Although health insurance through these programs does not currently cover surgery, transgender people can still apply for insurance and be covered under the qualifying plans. While surgeries are an important part of many people’s transitions, having access to health care and health insurance are important for everyone. If you are covered under these plans, you can still visit your doctor for check-ups and health concerns, and even receive hormone therapies.

For more information about Minnesota’s health insurance programs, please visit the Guide to Minnesota's Public Health Care Programs.

If you do not currently have health insurance, and think that you may qualify for one of these programs, please contact your county human services agency for more details. Each county offers one or more health plans to qualifying individuals.

Saber's Story
Hello,

I would like to tell you a couple of things about me. First, my name is Saber and I've been transitioning (FTM) for about two years. Second, I have just recently joined the Minnesota Transgender Health Coalition (MTHC) and become a board member. There is a reason I have been motivated to do this, which you will understand shortly. But first, if you meet me, you'd probably say one of my most endearing qualities is my sense of humor and my ability to use it to put people at ease. Well, transitioning has given me quite a lot of material in which to find humor! Take for instance the following, one of the reasons I became involved in MTHC:

Not too long ago, I went into the doctor's office (up in the north land where I live) because I was having some severe abdominal pain, around my ovaries. The doctor of our local clinic did an exam on me and said that what she would like is for me to get an ultrasound down in Duluth, wait around for the doctor down there to review the results, and if it is was what she suspected it might be, I would be hospitalized right then. She was guessing that I possibly had ovarian cancer. "OK" I said, "Just make sure that they know it is me, an FTM, coming down so they don't freak out when I get there."
