Announcing Our Keynote Speakers:  Saturday 1:45-2:45pm Susan Raffo
Saturday's keynote speaker, Susan Raffo, is one half of the Executive Director at PFund Foundation as well as a writer, community organizer and bodyworker living in Minneapolis. She is particularly drawn to the interconnections of trauma and oppression in both our individual bodies and our collective bodies and how that interconnection affects our relationship to resources to community, to our identities and to how we dream change. As part of this, Susan co-facilitates with Heather Hackman a workshop called "More than Skin Deep: Uprooting White Supremacy One Cell at a Time" that looks at the deeper implications of white supremacy for white people. She is also a member of the national Healing Justice Collective, a group that came together for the 2010 US Social Forum in Detroit. Susan is the editor of Queerly Classed: Gay Men and Lesbians Write about Class (South End Press, 1995) and Restricted Access: Lesbians on Disability (with Victoria Brownworth, Seal Press, 1995). Susan lives in a collective house, is part of a community garden, is part of a collective foodshare and started a childcare cooperative. She likes to do things in groups.

Sunday Keynote Speakers 1:30-2:30pm
Sunday's keynote speakers are Marcus Waterbury and his father David Waterbury of Minneapolis. Marcus is the Chair of the Board of Directors of the National Center for Transgender Equality, and graduated from Mount Holyoke College, a women's institution which recently re-issued his degree in his new name. He has been active in LGBT community organizing in the Twin Cities for over 20 years and works as a wealth advisor. David, a retired financial advisor, has been heavily involved in social justice and LGBT organizations since 1986, when his then-daughter came out as a lesbian. He chaired the second Governor's Task Force on Gay and Lesbian Minnesotans, and has served on the boards of GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network), the Headwater's Foundation for Justice, PFLAG St Paul-Minneapolis, and Faith in America. When Marcus came out to his parents again in 2003 (this time as a trans man), his parents celebrated his new identity and continued their process of educating themselves and others, this time around transgender issues and having a trans child.

The programming for this year's conference has already been set. The Minnesota Trans Health and Wellness Conference committee invited proposals for workshops and programming that address the joys and challenges of family diversity and the ways that family members (and families themselves) differ, such as gender identity, race, ethnicity, gender role, family make-up, sexual orientation, ability, culture, and class. We encouraged proposals to consider the term 'family' as an umbrella term for families of origin and the families we choose, create, and nurture as well as any other type of families we may be part of or envision for ourselves.

We also sought proposals that address and celebrate the wide range of diversity not only in our families but in our communities as well. We ask that all presenters bring to their work and approach their presentation with a basic understanding of racial, social, and economic justice, and remember that we are part of a multi-issue movement that includes gender liberation, as well as difference around race, class, age, sexuality, disability, immigrant status, and much more. Our goal is to provide challenging content for all ages, and all ages are welcome and encouraged to attend.

If you have a Conference related question or want to give us online feedback, please fill out our inquiry form.
