Information About Minnesota State Health Care Plan Coverage
Prior to 2005, Minnesota public health insurance programs offered some coverage of gender reassignment surgeries. However, as of August 1, 2005, SRS is no longer covered in the three public health insurance programs:

· Medical Assistance (MA)
· General Assistance Medical Care (GAMC)
· MinnesotaCare

Although health insurance through these programs does not currently cover surgery, transgender people can still apply for insurance and be covered under the qualifying plans. While surgeries are an important part of many people’s transitions, having access to health care and health insurance are important for everyone. If you are covered under these plans, you can still visit your doctor for check-ups and health concerns, and even receive hormone therapies.

If you do not currently have health insurance, and think that you may qualify for one of these programs, please contact your county human services agency for more details. Each county offers one or more health plans to qualifying individuals.
